A tip from the poker pro. Playing pocket jacks.

Drawing pocket jacks is no walk in the park

By DANIEL NEGREANU

Many Texas Hold ‘em players hate getting dealt two jacks because they feel they’re unlucky with them. Well, chances are it isn’t that they’re unlucky with these cards. They’re simply overvaluing the hand and misplaying it.

In Hold ‘em, the best hands you can get are A-A, K-K, Q-Q, and then J-J. However, there is a significant difference between the strength of the jacks and the queens.

WSOP 2006!!!
$10,000 world series of poker seats – as low as 2 dollars!!! – Use ap200 to get a 200% deposit bonus up to $200 on your first deposit

With queens, there are only two overcards ? cards higher than a queen ? that could hit on the flop and make Q-Q vulnerable.

With J-J, there are three overcards that could flop, making the hand more difficult to play.

If an overcard doesn’t flop, you still have a whole new set of potential worries, such as a coordinated board: 4-5-7, 3-4-5, 6-7-8. If an opponent is playing a little pair, slow-playing a bigger pair or is lucky enough to flop a straight, you’re doomed.

The J-J is the one hand that seems too strong to fold yet not strong enough to hold if there is much action ahead of you. If you’re playing a structured Limit Hold ‘em game, the impact isn’t as severe, but in No Limit Hold ‘em, where your entire bankroll is in jeopardy, pocket jacks must be played carefully.

Know when to fold
In fact, in a No Limit game, it’s easy to picture situations where you should fold them before the flop. Think about it for a second.

Let’s say an early position player raises the blind, and then a tight competitor re-raises all-in right behind. As you look down at your pocket jacks ? the fourth-best pair in the deck ? you have to ask yourself, what in the world could they have?

They could have a hand such as A-K, in which case you’d be getting good odds on your money. More often than not, though, one of them will be holding a pair bigger than yours.

It’s not a stretch to imagine that the first player might have a hand like A-Q, and the all-in raiser is sitting with a pair of kings in the hole. In this case, you’d be a 4-to-1 underdog to win the pot, and that’s not a good thing.

You will face countless dilemmas when holding a pair of jacks, and it’s the reason so many people despise the hand. Frankly, unless a jack hits the flop, you’ll never feel too safe.

Now, that’s not to say that you should automatically fold on the flop if you don’t catch a third jack. Instead, try to protect your hand on the flop with a good-size bet. But if someone does call, you should be willing to abort the mission.

Flop makes it, breaks it
For example, if you bet and the flop comes A-9-4, make one stab at the flop, trying to gauge information about your opponent’s hand. If he calls or raises in this spot, what do you think he might have? Chances are he’s holding an ace, which only gives you a 7 percent chance of winning the pot.

However, if the flop comes 9-6-2, it’s tough to fold your pocket jacks. The only playable hands that can beat you are 2-2, 6-6, 9-9, Q-Q, K-K, or A-A. In this scenario, bet your hand aggressively. But if your opponent raises, then you have a tougher decision to make.

The key here, as with most poker problems, is sizing up your opponent. If he holds aces, kings, or queens, would he have raised big before the flop? Is he the type of player who calls with small pairs before the flop? When he flops three of a kind, does he usually bet it aggressively or play it slow to suck more people in?

In the end, you’ll have to make a judgment call. Playing pocket jacks makes for some of the toughest decisions you’ll face in poker. But, hey, no one ever said this game would be easy.

Improve your poker game and learn starting hands power with poker book

The Illustrated Guide to No Limit Texas Hold’em: A cool format for learning strategy in
Texas Hold’em.
The Illustrated Guide to No Limit Texas Hold’em is formatted to offer a series of hands
(150) in real-game playing situations, then giving the reader an opportunity to make a
decision. This is followed by the suthor’s best strategy with the hand in the defined
circumstances and why. The first example is the top hold’em hand, a pair of Aces, and the
second offering is the worst hand, the hammer (7,2o).

Most of example starting hands and their analysis are completely agreeable and just like
in a real game a few are certainly debatable. A varity of situations are examined from the
often confusing tricky hands like pocket Jacks to big slick, Ace/King, all in differing
circumstances. The simple format allows the reader to quickly understand the presentation
and one can go through the examples in rapid fashion without having to read the paragraph
of description; but, the first time through it’s advisable to read everything since some
of the theoretical players may have been categorized.

A reader will pick up quite a few key skills to winning at poker after a couple of reads
through the book, especially with regard to pot odds, tricky hands, the importance of
position, all of the basic strategies for playing winning hold’em.

Someone whom has never played or hasn’t been active for years and has not read many how-to
poker books will find the Illustrated Guide to No Limit Texas Hold’em a good read,
especally if you already have the some of the classic how-to poker books by Cloutier or
Sklansky.

The Illustrated Guide to Texas Hold’em by Dennis Purdy
is another poker book you should
consider adding to your playing library. One feature of the book’s layout I found
particularly valuable is using the illustrations like flash cards. Thumbing throught the
text prior to a play session is a great way to prepare your game winning mind-set. If one
of the examples results in a marginal hand becoming a winner or perhaps you muck a loser
then the nominal cost of the book is repaid, even in a low-limit game setting. I rate the
Illustrated Guide to Texas Hold’em as a good how-to poker book and a welcome addition to
your game library.

Poker Limits – Stepping Up, Stepping Down

My first poker experiences were in the low-limit 7-Stud games at Commerce Casino in Los Angeles. From the start, poker was an important part of my income. It had to be. I couldn’t afford to go broke. I needed to avoid the fate that hit many of the good players around me. They experienced massive swings in fortune – one day they’re playing in the big games, the next they’re on the rail, trying to scrape together enough money for a buy-in.

Early in my poker career I set a simple rule for myself: I would never move to a higher limit until I won three consecutive sessions. If I lost three consecutive sessions at a given limit, I would move down to a lower limit.

It took discipline to stick to my rule. For a very long time ? years, in fact ? I never made it beyond the low-limit tables. I couldn’t put together three consecutive wins. It was frustrating, but it was a great learning experience. By the time I made it to higher limits, I was a seasoned, experienced player who could deal with the intense competition I encountered.

Another nice thing about using such a patient approach was that I always had comfortable padding in my bankroll. In those early years, I may have had a hard time winning three sessions in a row, but I was beating the games regularly. I could pay my rent and add to my bankroll. When I moved to higher limits, I had plenty of money to sustain myself through any bad runs. In any case, if a lousy run of cards lasted three sessions, I’d back down to a limit where I was risking less.

I know a lot of players who have a hard time using an approach like mine. Most can’t step back because they feel a lower-limit game is beneath them. Their egos tie up their heads and they try to prove themselves against better players. They end up playing higher than they can afford, in games that are tough to beat, and they wind up broke. As a professional, I don’t play for ego. I play for money. As Paul Wolfe recently pointed out, often a smaller game offers a better opportunity for profit.

Think about incorporating something like my three-win, three-loss rule in your own play. Stepping down a level when things go bad will not only preserve your bankroll, it will sharpen your skills and build your confidence. When you step up, you’ve got the momentum of a winning streak behind you. You’ll be playing your best ? ready for higher stakes and sharper players.

Widening the compatibility of online poker rooms seems to have become something of a trend in poker these days. To accommodate the many players who don’t play on a PC, a number of poker sites have recently launched Mac compatible online poker rooms. FullTiltPoker.com announced today that it has followed suit. Full Tilt this week launched the Beta version of its new, downloadable online poker client. The company said that much work had been put in to ensure that the software runs smoothly, and, at the time of its launch, Full Tilt reported no ?noticeable glitches.?

Until recently, Mac poker players’ options were few and far between. Players could opt for expensive PC simulation software, or else be forced to settle for a rinky-dink no-download poker option. Over the past several months, a number of online poker sites have made efforts to offer Mac poker players poker gaming on a level rivaling its PC counterpart. Full Tilt is the latest site to attempt this.
