Securities and Exchange Commission Want answers about the offer from Doyle Brunson and the World Poker Tour last July

US regulators are investigating a $700m bid for World Poker Tour Enterprises launched by Doyle Brunson, one of the game’s best-known players.

The Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday said it is formally investigating whether Mr Brunson’s unsolicited offer and its publication violated anti-fraud laws.

Shares in WPTE, parent of the World Poker Tour television series, rose more than 50 per cent when the offer from Mr Brunson and unnamed investors was disclosed in July.

But the shares fell when the bid expired just a few days later. WPTE could not substantiate the offer, saying Mr Brunson and Goodman & Chesnoff, the Las Vegas law firm representing him, had ended communication.

The SEC is trying to enforce subpoenas issued to Goodman & Chesnoff attorneys David Chesnoff and Chaka Henry to hand over documents and testimony, according to documents filed this week in federal court in Texas. The $700m offer represented a 100 per cent premium over WPTE’s then market value.

“Publication of this offer, widely covered in the media, triggered a steep rise in WPT’s stock price on record trading volume,” the SEC said.

Mr Brunson has invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination and declined to testify in the investigation.

He invoked the attorney-client privilege and asked the Goodman & Chesnoff attorneys to withhold documents related to the offer.

But the SEC’s latest court action seeks to set aside the attorney-client privilege on legal grounds. A WPTE spokesperson said the company would co-operate fully with the investigation.

Mr Brunson won the World Series of Poker in 1976 and 1977 and is author of Super/System, considered a bible for poker players.

The World Poker Tour is credited with fuelling the recent poker craze since the series was launched on US cable network The Travel Channel.

There will be no rest for the professionals even though the holiday season is upon us. The 2005 poker tournament trail will wrap up for the season in a couple days, and a short two weeks later they’ll have to have their games in shape to kick off the 2006 season. The World Poker Tour is going to be a major part of that kickoff!

PokerStars and the WPT will be kicking off the 2006 season by taking a trip to the Bahamas for the PokerStarspoker stars Caribbean Adventure at the Atlantis Resort and Casino. All of the major players on PokerStars, including the last three World Champions in Joseph Hachem, Greg Raymer and Chris Moneymaker, will be in attendance for the event from January 4th through the 11th. It is expected as well that 2005 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure champion John Gale will be back to defend his WPT title. Currently satellites are running for the event at PokerStars, where you can earn your $12,000 prize package to be able to participate in the event.

As there are still twenty days left in the month, the WPT also is offering the Seventh Annual World Poker Open at the Gold Strike Casino in Tunica, MS. The World Poker Open has been a charter member of the tour since the inception of the WPT and, starting January 9th, the World Poker Open will offer some of the best poker action east of the Mississippi as 2005 champion John Stolzmann attempts to reprise his championship run. The entirety of the event will be no-limit tournaments ranging in buy-in from $1,000 to the $10,000 WPT event, which will be contested from January 19th to the 23rd.

If that wasn’t enough, the WPT will debut its seventeenth tournament at the end of January. The Borgata in Atlantic City, NJ, will play host to the Borgata Winter Poker Open from January 20th to February 1st. 515 players came to the felt back in September for the first stop for the WPT in Atlantic City and it is expected that the crowds will be similar for the newest event on the tour, as it is one of only four stops on the East Coast for the WPT.

So far, the action for Season Four of the World Poker Tour has been outstanding. It is expected that this season alone will have in the neighborhood of $100 million in purses up for grabs between professionals and amateurs alike. This would double what the WPT prize pools have been for the first three seasons of the tour combined!

Television networks in the US are continuing their plans with poker programming in 2006.

ESPN exercised its option with Harrah’s Entertainment to retain the worldwide TV rights to WSOP-branded poker tournaments through the 2007 WSOP World Championship Main Event. According to a Harrah’s official, ESPN will pay about $20 million for these rights in the next two years.

In addition, ESPN signed a “multi-year” agreement with the Trump Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City for the worldwide TV rights to the United States Poker Championship.

The Travel Channel exercised its option with WPTE for the US TV rights to the fourth season of the WPT in 2006 and holds options for three additional seasons. During the 2005 season, The Travel Channel paid WPTE approximately $450000 in rights fee for each two-hour WPT episode according to financial documents filed by WPTE with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The FSN system of regional sports networks will also continue airing tournament poker, according to FSN spokesman Justin Simon.

Tips from the Pro’s

Brought to you by the pro’s at Full Tilt Poker – 100% Deposit Bonus up to $600!!!
play online poker

In the 18 months that I’ve been playing poker at Full Tilt Poker, the one question I am asked most often is a variation on the following:

“Hey Paul? What are you doing in this $10-$20 No-Limit game? Ivey, J-dags, and Matusow are at the $25-$50 No-Limit table, and E-dog is playing in the $50-$100 Limit game. Why don’t you join them?”

The first thing I do when I walk into a poker room is put my name on the lists of games I’m interested in; the next thing I do is have a good look at the particular games I’ve just signed up for. More often than not, I’ll sit at the first available table when my name is called, but I immediately take stock of the game and behave accordingly. Often times, everything is just fine, but sometimes I’ll ask to be added to the table change list. Other times, a seat change button is enough to make the game palatable. On rare occasions, I simply leave the table.

As I play, I take note of the loose players and tight players, and then use that information to decide which seat will be most profitable. Likewise, I keep a casual eye on the other games. If I get called for a table change, I make sure the new game is the more lucrative one; if it’s not, I’ll stay put and ask to be put at the bottom of the transfer list. And while I have seen unbeatable $3-$6 games and very soft $10-$20 games running side by side, it’s safe to assume that higher limits mean tougher games.

If you’re playing to learn, nothing will challenge your poker skills like being at a table with Howard Lederer and Phil Gordon. If you’re playing poker for entertainment and making money isn’t your goal, by all means choose your tables according to where you’ll have the most fun. But if your only goal is to make money, forget about everything except picking the weakest game at a limit you can afford, even if it’s the $1-$2 game when you’re itching to play $2-$4. In ring game poker, it is better to play smaller at the table you’re likely to beat than it is to play bigger at a tougher table. You also need to take your time about moving up a level. I have seen many $1-$2 players sustain steady win rates at those stakes for a month, then disappear for weeks after taking a shot at the $2-$4 game.

Knowing where to play is as important as knowing how to play. If you pay close attention to your game selection, you’ll grow the kind of bankroll that will allow you to have more games to choose from.

World Poker Tour comes up with a new twist to hold em in a “Casino” style game.

World Poker Tour Now Has Casino Game

——————————————————————————–
Game Was Recently Approved to be Played in Nevada

Now people who don?t even play poker but are fans of the World Poker Tour can walk into a casino and say the words ?all in? like they mean it.

After a field trial at Bellagio, the Nevada Gaming Commission approved the ?World Poker Tour All-In Hold?em? table game. The game was developed by Lakes Entertainment, a Minnesota-based casino operator and gaming company that owns more than half of World Poker Tour Enterprise?s stock.

The pit game looks a like a blackjack table. The action of the game is very similar to the version of Texas hold?em found in cardrooms. Players place a bet to receive two holecards. If they want to see the flop, players have to bet five times the original bet. They could also raise ?all-in? by betting 10 times the original bet.

The board is then dealt, and bets are paid off accordingly.

Like most casino table games, players can opt to lay down bonus bets that pay up to 500-to-1 for a royal flush. All the players play against the dealer.

The tables are adorned with the now-famous red, white, and blue ?WPT? logo and can accommodate six players, plus the dealer.

The game was already available at casinos in California, Missouri, and Michigan. Now that the Nevada Gaming Commission gave its approval, Bellagio will go to two tables and Mirage and Treasure Island will also add the game this month.

In January, it will be found at Gold Strike in Tunica, Mississippi, which will bring to 10 the number of casinos that offer the game.
