Every semester AbsolutePoker.com powers the Win Your Tuition series, which is a free Texas Hold?em tournament exclusively for college students. It is open to all higher-education students from around the world.

The first WYT was in the Spring of 2005 followed by another very successful tournament in the Fall of 2005. Thus far the WYT program has been able to pay the tuition of two motivated students and provide many others with laptops and scholarships.

The WYT Spring 2006 series began on January 31st and the Main Event will be held on May 4th.

Students hold ?em, fold ?em at weekly tournament

Students sardined themselves into the Commons Nov. 30 to participate in the weekly poker tournament sponsored by Recreation Activities. Almost 30 students showed up for the free Texas Hold ?Em game, the third this semester.

The event, organized by TJ Miller, University Housing?s recreation activities coordinator, is a free, four night cumulative tournament. Each night every entrant is issued 275 points to bet with. Miller has kept track of all participants winnings and at the end of Dec. 7, the last night of the tournament, the person who has won the most will receive a $50 gift certificate to Best Buy, with smaller prizes for other high finishers.

Miller had never played poker before the event, but was aware of its growing popularity among young people. At the suggestion of a colleague, he researched the game and organized the first tournament Nov. 9, complete with rule cards for everyone and posters displaying the value of various hands.

?I figured everyone was a novice like me,? Miller said. ?I researched it and kind of over-planned the first night.?

Twenty people showed up, twice as many as Miller expected, and they all knew how to play.

The event has grown every night since. Competition has been palpable, with tournament leaders and dark horse competitors still holding out hope for ultimate victory.

Carnegie Mellon student Jeremy Olisar won?t be paying his college tuition. Thanks to his skill at cards, his bill will be covered by online poker room AbsolutePoker.com. Olisar, 21, will receive a check this month covering his fall tuition, thanks to his final place finish in the “Win Your Tuition” online poker tournament in October. The student from Naperville, Ill, outplayed opponents from over 300 colleges in the free No Limit Texas Hold’em tournament.

“We want to create customer loyalty and brand recognition, and college players are the fastest growing segment of online poker participants,” Michael Edwards says. “But we’re also a young company, and not too separated from the years when Ramen noodles and Kraft dinners were our main meals.”

Edwards is the business development manager for AbsolutePoker.com, which set up specific rules for the winners. The champ must be in good scholastic standing with their school, prove they are enrolled, and be able to produce proof of fees for tuition and books.

Olisar will receive about $15,000.
